The third edition of the World Giving Index, involving 160 countries, is the latest in the largest study into charitable behaviour across the globe.
The report is based on over half a million interviews conducted by Gallup.
The report covers THREE sections, with the final ranking based on an average of these three measures:
- People who donate money to charity
- Volunteer their time
- Help a stranger
Australia took the Number ONE position with a World Giving Index score of 60%. Individual ranks were:
- 76% Donating money
- 37% Volunteering time
- 67% Helping a stranger
Ireland came a very close SECOND also with 60% and individual scores of:
- 79% Donating money
- 34% Volunteering time
- 66% Helping a stranger
United Kingdom came in at position EIGHT with 51% and individual ranks of:
- 72% Donating money
- 26% Volunteering time
- 56% Helping a stranger
Top FIVE countries for Donating money were:
- 79% Ireland
- 76% Australia
- 73% Netherlands
- 72% United Kingdom
- 71% Indonesia
Top FIVE countries for Volunteering time were:
- 58% Turkmenistan
- 53% Liberia
- 46% Uzbekistan
- 45% Tajikistan
- 44% Philippines
Australia was 12th, Ireland 15th and United Kingdom 35th.
Top FIVE for Helping a stranger were:
- 81% Liberia
- 72% Oman
- 71% Qatar
- 71% Sierra Leone
- 71% United States of America
Australia was 10th, Ireland 13th and United Kingdom 33rd.
