Mobile Phones in Australia

Most unlocked mobiles phone will work OK in Australia, but a chart showing some of the options is below.

In 2009, the market share divided by the three providers was about:

  • 10 million Telstra subscribers 40%
  • 8 million Optus subscribers 32%
  • 7 million Vodaphone (VHA) subscribers 28%

In 2003 the figures were:

  • 6.6 million Telstra 46%
  • 4.9 million Optus 34%
  • 2.6 million Vodafone 18%

Both Telstra and Optus have dropped in market share, whilst Vodafone has increase substantially.

Many of the smaller phone providers will use one of the above main phone companies to carry their service, such as these examples. (but note, they may only have access to 3G and 4G, maybe not 5G.)
