Long Service Leave in Australia

Long service leave is a period of paid leave given to an employee in recognition of a long period of service to an employer.

The standard entitlement to Long Service Leave is 8.6667 weeks on full pay after each period of 10 years continuous service with an employer. Although some awards can vary this between 7 and 15 years.

An employee may be eligible for a pro-rata payment on termination after a minimum period of 5 years continuous service.

As well as the standard provision for Long Service Leave, there are some provisions under the industrial relations legislation, for a Portable Long Service Leave to be available to building and construction industry employees.

From 1 January 2010, existing State entitlements to long service leave will be transferred to form part of the National Employment Standards.
