Preliminary 2016 NAPLAN Education results

Summary data released today (3rd August 2016) from the 2016 NAPLAN tests demonstrate that, compared to 2008 (the first year of NAPLAN), there have been gains in all content areas (except for writing), but not for all year groups.

At the national level:

Reading results for Years 3 and 5 saw significant gain compared to 2008.
Spelling results for Year 3 saw significant gain compared to 2008.
Grammar/punctuation results for Year 3 saw significant gain compared to 2008.
Numeracy results for Year 5 saw significant gain compared to 2008.
Writing results for Years 7 and 9 saw a significant decrease since 2011 (the year from which results can be compared with for this domain).
“There have been some significant gains in some domains in each state and territory, with Western Australia and Queensland standing out more than others,” says Chief Executive Officer of the Australian Curriculum, Assessment and Reporting Authority, Robert Randall.

Numeracy NAPLAN 2016

The Numeracy subject received the Highest scores in most States for year 9, but also received the Lowest scores in most States for year 3.

NSW achieved above national averages in all years and subjects except for Year 9 Writing where they only achieved 99.6% of the national average.
Other subjects and years ranged from 100% (Year 7 Writing and Year 9 Grammar and Punctuation) to 102.3% (Year 3 Spelling)

Victoria achieved above national averages in all years and subjects.
Subjects and years ranged from 100.1% (Year 7 Spelling) to 103.6% (Year 3 Writing)

QLD achieved above national averages in only Year 5 Grammar and Punctuation, with 100.2%.
Other subjects and years ranged from 97.4% (Year 3 and Year 9 Writing) and 99.7% Year 5 Reading and Year 9 Grammar and Punctuation

WA achieved above national averages in ALL Year 9 subjects, with between 100.4% (Year 9 Spelling) and 100.9% (Year 9 Writing and Numeracy)
Other subjects and years ranged from 97.5% (Year 3 Grammar and Punctuation) and 99.7% (Year 7 Numeracy)

SA achieved above national averages in only Year 7 Writing, with 100.3%.
Other subjects and years ranged from 95.8% (Year 3 Numeracy) and 99.5% (Year 7 Reading)

Tasmania ranged from 95.2% (Year 3 Spelling) and 99.9% (Year 9 Writing)

ACT achieved above national averages in all years and subjects except for Year 3 Writing (99.8%), Year 5 Writing (99.7%) and Year 5 Spelling (99.4%)
Other subjects and years ranged from 100.1% (Year 3 Spelling) to 103.4% (Year 3 and Year 9 Reading)

NT ranged from 80.5% (Year 3 Grammar and Punctuation ) to 90.3% (Year 9 Numeracy)

All percentage figures shown as the percentage of the national average for that year and subject.

Numeracy Results differ between years, with Year 9 Numeracy in most states being the highest of all grades, but Year 3 Numeracy, in most states, being the lowest scoring grades.
