Northern Territory Unrestricted Speed Limit Trial
The Northern Territory government is going to honour its commitment to allow an unrestricted driving speed on a 200km stretch of the Stuart Highway between Barrow Creek and Alice Springs for 12 months from February 1. 2014.
The results will be reviewed before any decision to expand the speed limit relaxation into other areas of the NT.
It was in 2007 that the Northern Territory removed its unlimited speed sections, and replaced them with a 130kph limit.
Learner and provisional license holders will still need to keep to their existing speed regulations.
It has been reported that the section of road being de-restricted has not had any speed related fatal incidents between 2001 and 2011.
